“Provence”
An idyllic rural landscape with the Chaîne des Alpilles in the distance. The Chaîne des Alpilles is a small range of low mountains in Provence, southern France, located south of Avignon. It is painted with great gusto, using heavy impasto, applied with a palette knife by the Avignon master, Gustave Vidal. This painting dates to around 1960 and is one of the best examples I have seen.
Vidal studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Avignon where he won many awards. He exhibited at the Paris Salon where he was an associate member. He also exhibited in Berlin, Brussels, London, Japan and Canada.
