“Chiens de chasse”

A delightful painting of a pair of French Basset hounds, by Maurice Vieillard. Basset Hounds are one of six recognised "basset"-type breeds in France. Dating to around 1900, the painting is an interesting depiction of the breed standard at the beginning of the 20th century. Signed bottom right with his monogram MV and presented in its original frame.  The painting has provenance from a Normandy auction house where it was sold as part of a collection of the artist’s work.

Vieillard was a native of Le Havre, but spent much of his time in Monmartre,Paris. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists and the Salon of Independent Artists between 1895 and 1901.
