Rémy MONNERET (ROM 1960-2004) “Sarah” French Symbolist
 
An engaging portrait of Sarah dating to between 1995 and 1996. This was a period in Rom’s short life that he was known to have been painting portraits and nudes. The painting is signed ROM and bears inscriptions verso, one in Hebrew.
The painting shows the influence of the symbolist painter Gustav Klimt, with a flat image brought to life by the use of shimmering gold and bronze colours to the background area. Symbolism was largely a reaction against naturalism and realism.
 
Rom was born in Champagnole in eastern France.  He studied under Jacques David. His early work was inspired by religion, before turning to portraiture and finally landscape.
 
Condition
In excellent original condition.  The frame has minor knocks and abrasions.
