A rare portrait of a young Maghreb woman signed Suzie Bernot and dating to around 1925.
Suzanne Bernot is recorded as being active in the 1920s and as having exhibited at the, Salon des Indépendants in 1927. She is mentioned in the Orientalist Directory “The Artists of Algeria” by E Cazenave.
French Orientalism has its roots in colonial Algeria and became popular from around 1905. The artist’s formed a colony centred around the Villa Abd el Tif where there was an annual competition and prize.
Condition
The colours are bright. There are three small repairs to the canvas with associated touching in. The frame has minor repairs.
